celebrating two years of Extensity

Much water has flown under the bridge since we rolled out the first issue of Extensity. We had christened our newsletter "Extensity" meaning ambit, extent or scope. It has been action filled years for us for sure, and the same has been the case for the IT industry and India as well!

Extensity was started with the aim to add value to you, our customers. We continue our endeavour to do this by capturing the essence of change and bring useful information and news on service and solutions which can help your business. Throughout our brief existence, we have kept pushing ourselves in analyzing what would make news to you and what format of presentation would help you to make use of this newsletter. Thank you for your enthusiastic feedback. We are happy to know that some of our regular "slugs" such as Insights, Industry News, Case Studies and Know-how provide value to you. Thank you too, for your emails with suggestions, constructive criticisms and insight that have truly inspired us and strengthened our commitment to help you stay in touch with the sweeping technological changes and business opportunities. It has been worth our while - definitely. Hope it has been the same for you too!

Today, change is the only constant. In our professional lives as well, we witness this change. Earlier, we needed to acquire new skills and knowledge to move up in our career. Today, to keep our jobs we need to keep learning new skills. The world around us too, has been celebrating change. Some change has been marginal, some has been disruptive. Disruptive change is often defined as a new technological innovation that overturns an existing dominant technology. Trends show that a disruptive change often initially under performs as compared to existing technology but comes to dominate by either filling a new role or moving up the performance scale. The most classic example of disruptive technology is Internet itself. What's more, it itself has spawned a set of other disruptive innovations that are trying to stake the same claim for themselves. Amongst these, some are still to establish themselves as dominant innovations, even though it must be said that many of them have changed the paradigm. A quick look around brings to mind innovations like e-commerce, VOIP and IPTV.

As we move along, there are two potentially disruptive technologies that are causing a paradigm shift. These are Open Source and Nano Technology. We are all familiar with the open source technologies. Many of us now recognise their power as well as the fact that they may not always deliver as well as commercial software. However, with time, and iterative effort, things have changed and we have a force to reckon with. The other force that will unleash itself soon is nano technology. It promises to change things in a fundamental way. We are yet to fathom the impact of being able to put sensors and probes at microcosmic level. The "string theory" tells us that abnormal becomes normal at that level. We cannot even start to think of the possibilities that may arise.

The Extensity of man's knowledge knows no bounds. We hope to capture a microcosm of that through our efforts and make it worthwhile for all of us!
