As someone once famously said, one could never have enough of storage, money and bandwidth. There is one more thing we could add to the list, which I'd rather not mention! By equating bandwidth to traditional 'in-demand' desirables like money, the person was only seeking to underscore it's growing importance. Today, ensuring there is enough bandwidth to drive critical applications is the challenge that faces many IT professionals. Particularly with the voice, data and video applications converging on a common information highway.
An overwhelming percentage of bandwidth is now delivered over IP which despite becoming the de facto protocol for networking, has an inherent problem; IP has traditionally been contention-oriented and also, is liable to fall prey to rogue traffic.
Fortunately, recent strides made in Quality of Service (QoS) and Class of Service (CoS) management over IP networks have now made it possible to run delay-sensitive, mission-critical applications with absolute control. Techniques around protocol classification, prioritization, bandwidth allocation and queuing, effectively assure that bandwidth is always available for business critical applications like ERP. Often, this is achieved at the cost of applications like mail and browsing, which are then served on a best effort basis.
So while we can't wish away the problem of not having enough bandwidth, what we can surely do, is better manage what's available. That should make at least some of our IT colleagues sleep easy.
