On the 19th of October, Sify completed 5 years at NASDAQ and was accorded the rare honour of ringing the trading bell. We were the first Indian Internet company to list on NASDAQ, and the second from India after Infosys. For Sify, it has been a long and satisfying journey. In an industry, where one quarter was often likened to a year due to the sheer number of exciting developments and changes that kept happening at a rapid pace, five years is a long time indeed.
Internet started as a vehicle for exchanging information. Its origins can be traced in the academic domain and as early as 1962; JCR Licklider of MIT had 'envisioned a globally connected network which would enable "anything" to easily access data and programs from any of the sites'. The ARPANET group then did some excellent work that has laid the foundation of the modern day Internet. The template developed by Arpanet was not only pioneering, it also had the ingredients of standing the test of explosive growth that was to be witnessed by the medium. Commercial Internet set in sometime in 1992, but it was not before the mid nineties that the early adopters realised the power of this medium.
Today, Internet is a serious business medium. The last bastion of the private network - the banking and finance industry - fell early this year when SWIFT adapted to Internet Protocol based Virtual Private Networks. Telcos around the world are quickly "unlearning" their carrier ways and adapting to the service oriented Internet Industry, where the customer is the final judge of what it wants and from whom. It is also a repository of information, available on fingertips. In a sense, it is a great leveler and enabler, truly making geography, history. The words of Licklider, who is often considered the grandfather of the Internet, had hit the nail on the head when he said, "people tend to overestimate what can be done in one year and underestimate what can be done in five to ten years".
